Friends, do you have a holiday spending plan in place for this December?
Its hard to believe the holidays are right around the corner. And despite what mass retailers tell us, it's quite possible to get through the holidays without spending a fortune. With this in mind, here are a few of my favorite tips for staying on budget and not getting wrapped up in holiday spending:
1. Set Limits for Total Holiday Spending
Use this holiday season as an opportunity to create a working, cash-only budget. Then use this template to decide how much money you can afford to spend. Including perhaps extra funds that might have been allocated elsewhere to fund your spending budget. Like money spent on your morning latte. You need to set a budget and limits that you will stick to - without caving in and racking up the credit.
2. Make Your Own "Naughty" or "Nice" Lists
Santa has to buy presents for the whole world, but you don't. If your shopping list includes more than five people outside of your immediate family, cut down your list. Then, for others you still wish to share gifts with, opt for homemade gifts instead. Think freshly baked cookies, crochet, DIY scrubs, or perhaps offering your time- in the offer of babysitting to allow new moms time away from home. This will ensure you spread the holiday cheer without looking like a Scrooge.
3. Give Your Time
Mom and dad, or other far-away family and friends, might love nothing more than a visit from you. Even holiday cheer is a great gift. Consider how many people go about their days without as much as a kind word from others. Image their surprise to find a digital card from a friend requesting a coffee date with them? Remember that time is the ultimate way to invest in others. Its the only commodity we can truly never get back. Give it freely this holiday season!
4. Give Personalized Gifts
A small, thoughtful gift is worth more than an expensive gift that someone may never use. Avoid impulses to shop at trendy department stores and start the holiday by taking a moment to think about what those on your list could really use. Remembering to give to others not only what is reasonable and affordable but what the recipient actually wants. After all, what good is an expensive gift you think they might want versus what someone actually wants?
5. Organize Group Volunteering Instead of Holiday Parties
Your friends probably struggle with overspending as much as you do over the holidays. Give them the relief of forgoing buying gifts for you by organizing a group volunteer day instead. You'll get to spend quality time together come away from your outing with a true sense of what the meaning of the season is!
Friends, don't let holiday season put you into debt come the new year! Spend time with your friends and family, base your gift buying on sentiment rather than dollar value, and avoid giving yourself a year-round debt headache. If you can follow these above tips, you'll find yourself singing "Joy to the World" all over again!
Now be sure to reply to this message and let me know your biggest holiday savings plan tip you will be implementing at home this year?
Best wishes xoxo,
