Today in Strangeness:
It was on this day in 1844 that the mellifluous blast of the foghorn first sounded. Tabitha, a stowaway cat, was recovered in a Tower Air luggage crawlspace after 12 days and 32,000 miles of free flight ('94). Happy birthday to Etch a Sketch ! The classic art tool/toy first went on sale 57 years ago.

On this day in 64 AD, a great fire destroyed two thirds of the city of Rome. Also, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was nominated for an unprecedented third term as President of the United States (1940), and Douglas "Wrong Way" Corrigan arrived in Ireland-he had left New York bound for California (1938).

It was on this day in 1964 that the TV show The Twilight Zone aired its final episode on CBS after a five-year run. The iconic series, hosted by Rod Serling (who wrote 92 of its episodes), was known for using sci-fi to relay strong social commentary. TZ had a healthy afterlife in syndication, and spawned two TV remakes, and a feature film-- not to mention serving as the inspiration for our newsletter name, CoastZone! Now, in the very latest news, TZ is set to become a stage play!
