Until next time, Katie Questions? Comments? Email me at:katie@gophercentral.com *-- Start Incorporating this Anti-Aging Fruit--* I don't typically reach for this specific fruit but perhaps I should. Pears are an anti-aging super food that can help fight age-related conditions like cardiovascular disease. For one, an antioxidant in pears called procyanidins has shown to help decrease stiffness in , making it easier for the to pump blood throughout the body. This antioxidant has also shown to lower LDL (bad) cholesterol while increasing HDL (good) cholesterol, which means you have a lower risk of having a attack! Even though they're a sweet fruit, pears have also been linked to a lower risk of diabetes. The dietary fiber in pears helps to slow down digestion so the body has more time to break down excess sugars. This can help stabilize and lower blood sugar levels, and thereby reduce diabetes risk. Last but not least, the health-boosting nutrients in pears can also help lose stubborn weight. A serving of pears is low in calories, high in water content, and relatively high in dietary fiber. A low calorie, nutrient-rich diet has been shown to aid weight loss, while increased hydration has shown to contribute to a healthy weight. What's more, the fiber in pears can help you feel full and therefore prevent overeating.

It's Katie bringing you another week of tips, hints, styles, and trends to help you look and feel your best! When one or both of your feet are swollen, it can be hard to move around. And it can hurt, too. It's not always clear why it happens, but some health conditions can make it more likely. I often notice my hands and my feet swell in high humidity or after a large sodium intake. However, if you notice it's constant, you should get medical help. Until next time, Katie Questions? Comments? Email me at:katie@gophercentral.com *-- Are Your Feet Swollen?--* You could have Edema. This is when your body holds on to too much water. It can make your feet puffy as well as your hands and face. You might notice it after a long airplane flight or if you stand for hours at a time, and some women have it around their monthly period. It usually goes away on its own but in the event it doesn't you should see your doctor. A lot of times, someone trips or takes a wrong step and they twist their ankle. But it's not uncommon to just "shake it off". However if you notice a swollen foot or ankle afterwards, it can be a sign of a broken bone or a sprain. Many times people don't even realize they really hurt themselves. If you have never heard of Chronic Venous Insufficiency it is important to know that in order to get back to your from your legs and feet, your blood travels in veins with one-way valves to keep it from flowing back down. These valves can get damaged as you get older or if you stand or sit for long periods of time. Damage to the valves also can be the result of blood clots. If your blood doesn't return to your the way it should, it can collect in your legs and feet and cause swelling. What can you do if you experience a lot of swelling? Well, one solution is: RICE. Not your average, "rice" though. RICE stands for rest, ice, compression, and elevation. It's most useful for sprains and broken bones, but it can help if your feet are swollen for other reasons, too. If you rest and put your feet up (elevate them), fluid will flow away from your feet. Ice makes blood vessels narrower ,limiting blood flow, and helps with pain. Moving around and special extra-tight socks called compression socks, or wraps around your feet, can help push fluid away from your feet.

*-- How To Repair Rough Dry Feet--* Step 1: Soak your feet in warm water for 20 minutes every night before going to bed.
Step 2: Slather your feet in petroleum jelly immediately after soaking them in warm water, then place a pair of cotton socks on your feet before going to bed. The petroleum jelly will help seal in moisture while you sleep.
Step 3: Place a humidifier in your room while you sleep. When a humidifier is filled with water, it releases the water as vapor through the air, which is absorbed by the skin.
Step 4: Use warm or cool water in the shower instead of hot water, which may be removing the moisture from your skin and making your feet feel dry.
Step 5: Wash your feet with a mild soap that contains oils and fats. If your skin feels tight after showering, switch to a soap that contains moisturizers and makes your skin feel soft instead.

*-- An Anti-Aging Routine for Lips--* The easiest anti-aging lip hack is just to remember the skin around your mouth should be treated the same way as your other skin. If you're patting on a nightly serum, apply it there too. If you're smearing on sunscreen, get close to your lip line and use a chapstick or lipstick with at least an SPF 30.
A quick zap of a laser or an in-office chemical peel can help treat fine lines and pigmentation around the lips that don't seem to go away with topical treatments. The reason the lines develop is because muscles around the mouth constrict folding the overlying skin. Lasers and peels can help improve skin tone and texture and minimize the appearance of lines. There's less downtime than a laser or peel, and they're not melanin or pigment sensitive.
Not all lip fillers are done with the intention of creating bigger, celebrity-like lips. With age, the border of the lip, the so-called white roll, loses its definition. It is common for lipstick to bleed from the red part of your lip onto your skin because you lost structure at the border. The best way to treat this is with a filler to restore volume and structure around the mouth. Over-treating the lip border can give you duck lips, but subtle treatments go a long way to define the lip from the skin surrounding the mouth.

Today's Hints: To nix calluses rub castor oil onto them before bed and cover with socks. The oil's ricinoleic acid loosens the bonds that hold together the hardened skin, so you can slough it off with a sponge in the morning. Do this nightly until the calluses are gone!
To kill fungus mix 1 Tbs. of baking soda and 1 Tbs. of hydrogen peroxide. Spread onto infected nails, rinse after 15 minutes, then file the nail's top layer. Baking soda dries up fungus-breeding moisture, while peroxide wipes out infection. Use 3 times a week for 2 to 3 weeks as needed.
To soften heels add 1 cup of oats and 1/2 cup of honey to a large basin with warm water, soak for 15 minutes to see immediate results. Emollient honey draws moisture into dry skin, oatmeal's beta-glucans help retain that hydration and warm water softens skin so ingredients penetrate better.
'Go Green' Hint: It's as easy as going outside.
I have mentioned before in Handy Hints that opening your windows to fresh air and going outside are great ways to reduce your risk of a viral infection. Viruses hate fresh air and sunshine. But spending time outdoors has a number of other health benefits.
It's no surprise that spiking pollen levels in the spring cause itchy eyes, but the surprising relief may be stepping outside. The vitamin D production stimulated by sunshine can reduce allergy symptoms by as much as 50 percent. Spend at least 20 minutes outside in the sun and try a vitamin D supplement.
Irritated nasal passages and sinus pressure are frequent symptoms of spring pollen. Walking briskly outdoors for 10-15 minutes kick-starts your body's production of adrenaline, which has the power to shrink swollen mucous membranes and open your sinuses, improving drainage.
