Original post SAR01 IC Posts: 39788 August 3rd, 2016, 3:16 pm #1 wrote this for another board and decided to share here..... too many things can happen to a cat that goes out. will not go into gory detail... we have rescues and fixed and vaxed and re-homed over 200 cats in the last 35 yrs. we still have 40 left as we stopped rescues 5 yrs ago and only dealing with what we have left. almost all are special needs and I am not sure will ever leave our home until they cross that bridge. I have 4 areas with 10 cats each as little "families" and then we free feed anything that is in the abandoned barn to keep rats and vermin down. the inside groups get one to 2 tablespoons of canned meat and fed urinary blend dry food. they get treats a few times a day while they are being groomed, or medicated or just loved on. we have feeding cages, the doors are always open unless they are being fed so that they all get their food. instead of buying treats we started out buying kitten chow as a little treat, but that got too expensive so I buy a 22 lbs bag of meow mix and use that sparingly as a little snack/treat. I go through litter and horse bedding pellets like water.the house litter boxes are filled with 1/2 base of non scoop Fresh step (with carbon charcoal) and then topped with a good scoopable, I bought 30 gallon totes and cut a doorway in the end and they can fit in and stand up and have plenty of "room to work" :) the horse bedding pellets are in 40 lb bags and will turn to sawdust when wet and are biodegradable. when I need to clean the boxes I can just scoop and then throw the sawdust in the back woods and it will be gone in the spring, filled up the bottom of the cleaned pan and drizzle a bit of water to make it start to soften.. will last 3 weeks to a month with daily cleanings(scooping).. you will know when it needs changes when you can smell the urine. I usually have 2 side by side as they pee in one and poo in the other. a little will expand 3 times so a little goes a long way. I have a friend that is a vet tech and I own stock in the vet clinics around here...:) hope this helps...:)

I'm told you should feel HONORED!!! mine will bring me little "gifts" too.
I have bowls of dry food out, one in the kitchen, kitty bedroon, laundry room, sunporch, and garage....Also have water and 4 litter boxes in each...the garage and sunroom, and 2 in the laundry room and 0ne in the cat room.....these get cleaned 7 times a day..every day!!!!! I have a total of 13 kitties, here, there, and here....all spade and neutered, all indoor now that we have a neightbor that doesn't like cats, and has a 357... out of the 13..... 5 stay in the garage, 3 stay on the porch, and 5 are in the house...2 of wich get to go with me out and they come right back in. In the summer , 8 go out to the "Cat House" a 2 story dutch barn set up like they're own little "palace", and chicken wire fence for a "playpen!" now, I split one large can of ground catfood between the 13 of them! once a day, and if I forget, I have them following me around telling me about it...the loudest talker is billy b, yep, the one that I had to rescue the other night. If he get locked out in the sunroom and you walk by, he takes his paws and FRANTICALLY paws at the window till you talk to him...I have some of the shiniest patio doors! well, enough for tonight!
then my friend Sandy posted, she passed in 2016, but she took 3 of our kittens over the yrs.
Well, I can testify to SAR's kitties....., they are all cute & wonderful! Each has their own personality. We have two kitties., and one is toothless. Last spring we had to have ALL of Misty's teeth out. (she is 8 years old) . Dr said she is allergic to something in her own saliva. We never knew she had a problem until she started to drool intensely, then we took her in. She was the one who ALWAYS ate the dry food! Be that as it may, after about 2 weeks or so of soft food (wet), she was back to her bowl nibbling on the dry. Her gums have toughened up and she eats it all the time! Our other kitty, Trib, really doesn't like dry food and would probably die without his mix of canned and dry, two times per day. Of course, this one has an intestinal problem and he throws up quite frequently. But, he seems none the worse for wear.......ask SAR! He's "Mr Personality"
SAR01: Yep!!! Tribble....Mr. Personality for sure!!! He thinks he owns the world when he is out on his "leash"..too

love remembering these!
December 31st, 2000, 11:35 am Urgh!!!!!
I was rudely awakened this morning about 8 am with a horrendous CRASH and kittie screams and thumping of kitty feet scampering!
SOMEONE who shall remain nameless (Jake!) the brute!!!!) chased my baby girl Quinn all over the kitchen and then Chance got in the act, and chased her up over the headers of the cabinets,
(That I have decorated with greenery and birdhouses, and she jumped the expanse from one side to the other, landed on the frig, slide down the side of the stove and knocked over a basket of utensials. No one was hurt, but Both Daddy and Mommy came running , and of course the guilty parties sat there grooming, as if to say, Job well done... we were NOT happy!
And from SHirley when they house sat for us!
Talk about Kitties!! I once had the honor of house sitting and "babysitting" for a dear friend for three days. it was an honor because she never goes away that long and to have the trust was grand. The horses were a worry as I hadn't been around them for so long...they turned out to be the easiest. The kitties, however went like this: At a certain time, garage kitties were to be put into the house, while some went to the sunroom,in the meantime, this one cannot be with this one and some in the house had to go to the garage. Then in the evening we reversed the rotation. The first day was chaotic..and was terrified that "Twitter" would be hurt by "Spook" By the end of the third day,Sue was home. No one was injured or maimed....I was very pleased that we all survived. I will do it again if asked. (((((Sue)))) CB34

Some of Quinn's adventures
January 14th, 2002, 2:51 pm
I got up with the day planned, do laundry in the am, and have an appt at 3, so I am busy, and little Quinn just had to have her "mommy" fix....she is following me everywhere, and as I am in the laundry room, she jumps up on the dryer, and landed on CLEAN DRY towels, and they go sliding off and she is airborn ...feet flailing, and lands "PLUNK" in the bowl of water...cold fresh water... and she goes one way, the water goes all over, and I am laughing!!!! great begginning..heh???

It seems a lot of us on here are blessed with multiple furry family members. I have 13 cats right now, but had 28 last year. We live on a farm so the cats are all outside but get fed to supplement the rewards of their hunting efforts and so they will know where 'home' is. I also have a border collie who herds the cats when I need them to move from where they are at that point in time - and yes he is pretty good at it. He also guards our pasture fence line if the cattle start reaching through the fence. I would like to share a bit of wisdom I learned the hard way, but I am not sure on which board to post so I will include it here. Do not use Hartz flea and tick shampoo for dogs. I gave my a bath with it and the poor thing started stumbling around, had a hard time keeping its balance and bumping into everything. It was more than a loss of coordination, it included shaking spells (almost like seizures but not quite, or not really bad ones if they were), dilated eyes, and confusion/being disoriented. I kept trying to figure out what was wrong with him and thought about what had changed or been done differently. The only thing I could come up with was the bath. So I did an internet search on side effects of Hartz flea and tick shampoo and found multiple stories of seizures and even death related to the use of the Hartz shampoo. One pet owner rushed his to the vet, but was not able to get there quickly enough to save the and the owner developed seizures from applying the shampoo without using gloves. I gave my another bath, hoping to wash off the effects of the Hartz shampoo and luckily and in answer to prayers, the additional bath worked and resolved the issues. Thankfully my doesn't seem to have any lasting effects of the experience. To remember which shampoo to avoid, I remember it as "Hartz Hurts." I hope this helps to serve as a notice before anyone else experiences the heartache of causing harm to their pets or even their death.

It was great to see your post, Mary! this community board (hosted on Proboard) is new, we were for years on YUKU.com but they moved last year to tapatalk and no one liked it.. so I found this board. so there is a link to the archives and everything here has a dup. over there with thousands of posts over 18 yrs. so feel free to read there and if you want you can bring a thread over if you want to have a discussion! over there somewhere I also posted about Hartz...they are BAD BAD BAD! I had cats seizure and some never regained... I wish they could put Hartz out of business! I stil have what is left of the un adoptables. about 32. of those I can see where several will have to be escorted to the bridge probably before winter... some soon. several have congestive failure.. some have renal failure. I will cry, but they are a hindrance to what I might want to do .. as in moving, I can not move with out thinking of them ..if I have to take any that are left...so as the numbers go down I am being freed up.. it still hurts ..it has been a part of our life for so many yrs. and I will always need one of 2 pets. but I need the numbers to go way down with only me in the picture.. both for them, and for me. I'm sure Cathy has talked about me moving back down home... but the kitties are a major concern as to where I move.! I don;t mind caring for them.. but I just need them out of my house! that alone would free me up to have more of a life for ME! (not being selfish, after 40 plus yrs of caring for animals and rescues....I think I am ok with being "done"
